Steph Simon Gallery symbolizes one of the main places of modern French design in the post-war Paris. Planned to open in December 1955, it finally opened in March 1956, at 145 Boulevard Saint Germain. It quickly became, in the course of the 50s and 60s, one of the most important venues of the artistic culture in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Steph Simon started, before the gallery, in 1949, as a concessionaire of Ateliers Jean Prouv\u00e9 for the commercialization of furniture and prefabricated structures. His location \u2014 then at 52 avenue des Champs-Elys\u00e9es \u2014 was not an exhibiting place for Jean Prouv\u00e9\u2019s furniture but an office. These few years allowed him to establish a close relationship with major French architects and important companies of the Reconstruction. Most of them would later become privileged clients.<\/p>\n<p>When it opened in March 1956, the Steph Simon Gallery was a major exhibiting space for modern design. It presented furnishing pieces of Jean Prouv\u00e9 and Charlotte Perriand, the lighting fixtures of Serge Mouille, the cylindrical ceramics of Georges Jouve and the rice paper ball lights of Isamu Noguchi. Steph Simon also used the opportunity to exhibit a few other designers \u2014 sometimes introduced by Charlotte Perriand, such as Sori Yanagi \u2014 who revealed another facet of the gallery; ceramics by Yves Mohy and Pierre Culot, weavings by Simon Prouv\u00e9, tableware by Jean Luce or even a chair by Serge K\u00e9toff.<\/p>\n<p>Another innovative and visionary element was to open very quickly, within the gallery, a small design office in order to draw projects for interior design, including furniture by Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouv\u00e9 or Serge Mouille. This design office was active from 1956 to 1960. It also drew, for Charlotte PErriand\u2019s \u201cbloc\u201d bookcases and sideboards, custom-made models, adapted to the place. A whole new generation of architects, but also the first interior designers, came to the Steph Simon Gallery to buy contemporary furniture and objects in order to invent new decors.<\/p>\n<p>Steph Simon participated in very few professional fairs, but was however present at the Salon des Arts M\u00e9nagers in 1958, in the \u201cFoyer d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui\u201d section, which represented an essential place for contemporary creation at the time.<\/p>\n<p>After several years of development, the gallery closed in 1974. Saint Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s then lost an important place of post-war French design.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, the Laffanour-Downtown Gallery, perpetuating the tradition in the rue de Seine, bought the Steph Simon Gallery and its stock. Steph Simon, galeriste pionnier s\u2019est engag\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s des designers tels que Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouv\u00e9, Isamu Noguchi pour d\u00e9fendre leur travail, l\u2019\u00e9diter et le diffuser aupr\u00e8s du grand public. Conscient de l\u2019importance du r\u00f4le de Steph Simon, Fran\u00e7ois Laffanour a acquis le fonds d\u2019archives de la galerie en 2001 et en est aujourd\u2019hui le d\u00e9positaire de la m\u00e9moire, en s\u2019appuyant sur les photos d\u2019expositions, factures d\u2019achat, bons de commandes et de d\u00e9p\u00f4ts et surtout sur les plans d\u2019\u00e9tudes d\u2019am\u00e9nagements int\u00e9rieurs avec des pi\u00e8ces iconiques telles que le Bureau Pr\u00e9sidence de Jean Prouv\u00e9, la Biblioth\u00e8que Nuage et la Table Forme libre sign\u00e9es Charlotte Perriand. En 1956, au c\u0153ur du quartier historique de Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s (145, boulevard Saint-Germain), il ouvre sa galerie \u00e9ponyme qui est devenue tr\u00e8s vite une v\u00e9ritable r\u00e9f\u00e9rence sur la sc\u00e8ne du Design fran\u00e7ais et international. Il signe des contrats d\u2019exclusivit\u00e9 avec les architectes et designers novateurs et fonde un bureau d\u2019\u00e9tudes pour des commandes sp\u00e9ciales (biblioth\u00e8ques, bahuts, meubles de rangement, am\u00e9nagement int\u00e9rieur&#8230;). Le bureau reste ouvert de 1956 \u00e0 1960 et donne naissance \u00e0 des pi\u00e8ces uniques, devenues des pi\u00e8ces cultes et iconiques du Design d\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td style=\"border: 0px !important; background-color: #fff; vertical-align: middle; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 30px;\" colspan=\"2\">Les sc\u00e9nographies des expositions chez Steph Simon sont soigneusement \u00e9labor\u00e9es par Charlotte Perriand mettant en valeur non seulement le mobilier, mais aussi les luminaires de Isamu Noguchi, les cylindres en c\u00e9ramiques de Georges Jouve, les vases en gr\u00e8s de Jeanne et Norbert Pierlot ou encore les c\u00e9ramiques de Pierre Roulot d\u00e9couvertes au fil des ann\u00e9es. Il devient d\u00e8s 1949 concessionnaire des Ateliers Jean Prouv\u00e9 pour le d\u00e9veloppement et la vente du mobilier avec des bureaux situ\u00e9s au 52, avenue des Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es. C\u2019est gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ces derniers que Steph Simon a pu tisser des liens \u00e9troits avec de grands architectes de la Reconstruction. Il a fallu attendre une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es pour que le nom de Steph Simon resurgisse sur la sc\u00e8ne artistique et retrouve ses lettres de noblesse gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Fran\u00e7ois Laffanour. Suite \u00e0 l\u2019acquisition des archives en 2001, Laffanour &#8211; Galerie Downtown organise une premi\u00e8re grande r\u00e9trospective en 2005 accompagn\u00e9e d\u2019une publication du livre \u00ab Steph Simon. R\u00e9trospective (1956 &#8211; 1974) \u00bb qui retrace l\u2019histoire du parcours de Steph Simon et d\u00e9voile une partie des documents d\u2019archives. Aujourd\u2019hui, 17 ans plus tard, Laffanour &#8211; Galerie Downtown trouve pertinent de r\u00e9affirmer son statut de l\u2019h\u00e9ritier des droits des archives de Steph
