  • Jean Prouvé - Architecture

6 x 9 dismountable house

Ca. 1946

Wooden panels, structure with central portal made of folded steel sheet

Dimensions:

H. 102.36 × W. 354.33 × D. 236.22 in.

The 6 × 9 house is a direct variant that was produced in very limited numbers beginning in 1946. After initiating the production of demountable houses in 1944 to address the urgent housing needs of war victims in Alsace-Lorraine, Jean Prouvé began, from that moment onward, to consider other, larger housing models capable of accommodating families.

The primary development of this house lies in its increased surface area, which required the introduction of two internal portal frames to support the longer structural span. It appears that the model was not produced in large quantities, as Prouvé quickly moved on to work on other, larger housing designs conceived according to different structural principles.

This line of research would eventually lead to the first Maison Tropicale, built entirely in aluminum in Niamey in 1949, as well as to the realization of the all-metal Métropole houses developed for the Meudon construction project.
