CHARLOTTE PERRIAND
ICONIC PIECES

Share

Throughout her life, rich in furniture creation and interior design, Charlotte Perriand always knew how to bring the furniture she created closer to the space for which it was designed. Her early research into French Modernism, as a founding member of the UAM in 1929, allowed her to work with a new material at the time; metalic tube. From this collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, a whole series of modern furniture was produced, that would mark the foundations of her work. From this modern world in movement, Charlotte Perriand turns very quickly, in the middle of the 30’s , towards wood, material which will be dear to her throughout her life. From the tables, in solid pine, of the Savoyard tradition, to the elegant and refined tables inspired by her travels in Japan, Charlotte Perriand tried to understand the mystery of the equilibrium of the forms she observed in nature and that she photographed, with her friend Pierre Jeanneret, trying to understand their structure. Thus, from the observation of a worn pebble on the beach, as well as that of driftwood or a tree section, she sought to penetrate the mystery of this harmony that emerges from nature and to reproduce it in her furniture for which she worked on extremely sophisticated shapes where the angles are rounded, the sides of the table subtly cut, the ovals skillfully deconstructed in order to tend towards a balance closer to the nature. From the furniture for the House Equipment made in 1947, in collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret, to the furniture of editions with the Steph Simon Gallery, since 1956, Charlotte Perriand created pieces that have now become, for many of them “iconic pieces”.

“Man and the universe are intimately linked, which is why I can never separate the parts from the whole when it comes to my discipline, architecture from the environment, equipment from architecture.”
