Galerie Downtown invites you to discover its new exhibition – Joseph Savina “L’avant garde bretonne”, from February 8 to March 2, 2024.

Joseph Savina (1901-1983) was a French cabinetmaker and sculptor, renowned for his collaboration with Le Corbusier. A native of Douarnenez in Brittany, he was awarded the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France. Savina played a key role in the Breton art movement Seiz Breur, promoting a modernization of Breton craftsmanship. His Celtic Art workshop marked the fusion of tradition and modernity, making a significant contribution to twentieth-century art and design, notably through his work for Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp.

The exhibition will highlight his passion for innovation and his significant contribution to sculpture and furniture, through a rare collection of pieces testifying to the quest for a Brittany that is both rooted in its tradition and resolutely turned towards modernity.

At the heart of our exhibition is the Ozon Opus sculpture, the result of a unique collaboration between Joseph Savina and Le Corbusier. This work represents the culmination of their artistic dialogue. Created in wood and then sublimated by Le Corbusier’s polychromy, it embodies their shared desire to transcend the boundaries of the decorative to achieve pure sculptural expression. The initials J.S – L.C engraved on the work bear witness to their creative symbiosis and enduring friendship.
