On the occasion of Design Miami.Paris 2026, Laffanour | Galerie Downtown presents a selection of significant works of 20th-century design, highlighting Charlotte Perriand’s legacy through an exceptional bookcase created in 1959.

A unique piece conceived as a special commission, this double-sided bookcase, measuring over three metres in length, reflects a pivotal moment in Charlotte Perriand’s exploration of storage systems and spatial organisation.

Developed within Steph Simon’s design studio, it stands among the earliest examples incorporating a system of detachable metal supports, preceding the later standardisation of Perriand’s modular bookcases. Its five levels, defined by the interplay of wood and black lacquered metal, create a composition that is both rigorous and open, conceived as much to structure a space as to inhabit it.

Distinguished by its exceptional proportions, black lacquered steel sliding doors and entirely bespoke construction, this bookcase stands apart from more conventional productions of the period. It embodies a rare moment in Perriand’s work, where experimentation, architectural thinking and craftsmanship converge.
